What a “flipping” fantastic way to wrap up the term! Today, the Gibbons transformed our classroom into a bustling breakfast party, putting our recent math focus—measurement—into a real-world (and delicious) context.

The growth we’ve seen in their mathematical thinking throughout this study has been incredible:

The Evolution of Measuring: We began by exploring the concept of size using non-standard units—measuring our world with blocks, markers, and even pieces of pasta! Two weeks ago, we took the big leap into standardized units, learning how to use rulers and scales to get the job done with professional precision. As we discussed the importance of standardized units in the “real” world, we decided that a cooking morning would be the perfect way to put our skills to the test!

Student-Led Planning: To throw a party, you need guests! The children took this as an opportunity to practice their literacy skills. We brainstormed the “must-haves” of a successful invitation—dates, times, and a mouth-watering menu—before the children hand-crafted personal invitations for their families.

The Mathematics of Cooking: Our study moved from the classroom floor to the kitchen counter. The Gibbons took full charge of the scales and measuring cups, carefully weighing flour and measuring milk to ensure the pancake batter was perfectly balanced. They even practiced their fine motor skills using child-safe utensils to carefully cut the fresh fruit they brought in for toppings.

The Ultimate Hosts: This was truly a student-run event. The Gibbons were in charge of organizing the classroom layout, setting up a beverage station with tea, coffee, and juice for the adults, and preparing their own well-deserved chocolate milk.

A Spotless Finish: Perhaps most impressively, the hard work didn’t stop when the eating did! The children took total ownership of the cleanup—washing the cooking materials, tidying the stations, and ensuring the room was spotless after our guests left.

It was a joy to see the pride on their faces as they served their parents and demonstrated just how much they’ve grown. A huge thank you to all the families who joined us for our “Breakfast Party”—it was a truly delicious success!

Check out our mini-chefs, mathematicians, and hosts in action below!

At Wells Bangna, taking action is a cornerstone of the IB Primary Years Programme. Action allows our students to apply their learning in meaningful ways, fostering responsibility, care, and global citizenship. This year, our K3 “Gibbons†class has launched a year-long action project directly connected to their class animal: the gibbon.

To begin this journey, the class partnered with the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GRP) in Phuket, an organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and protecting gibbons and their habitats. GRP kindly shared learning materials with the class, which sparked thoughtful conversations about conservation and animal protection.

After reading the story provided by GRP and showing interest in a year-long project connected to their class animal, the children held a class vote to decide which gibbon they would sponsor. Their choice was Tam, a female gibbon currently under the care of GRP. To kickstart the sponsorship, their teacher made an initial donation covering three months of support for Tam.

Over the coming months, the Gibbons will be planning and carrying out various projects and initiatives to raise both awareness and funds for GRP and Tam. These may include class-led fundraisers, creative awareness campaigns, and sharing their learning with the wider Wells community.

The children are already brimming with excitement and ideas, and this project will give them a tangible way to see how their actions can make a difference beyond the classroom.

Stay tuned for updates on this inspiring project as the Wells Bangna Gibbons continue to learn, act, and make a difference for Tam and her fellow gibbons in Phuket!

The Grade 5 Exhibition is the culminating project of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). It represents the final step in our students’ journey through the PYP and is a significant milestone in their development as young learners and changemakers.

Over the past several months, students have worked in teams to investigate real-world issues they care deeply about. They conducted research, collaborated with peers and mentors, and took meaningful action to create positive change in their communities. This process helped them develop essential skills such as critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, and project management.

The exhibition is not just a showcase of what they have learned; it’s a reflection of who they have become. Through this experience, students have grown in confidence, responsibility, and independence. Today’s presentations are their way of telling the story of that growth, sharing their questions, discoveries, challenges, and the impact they hope to make.

We invite you to celebrate with us as our Grade 5 students share their learning journeys and demonstrate what it means to be caring, curious, and globally-minded learners.

This week, Grade 5 students from Wells Bang Na had the opportunity to volunteer with Bangkok Community Help’s water treatment project in Khlong Toei. Working alongside staff from BCH, as well as their partners from jBio, the students participated by treating water in the reservoir and handing out bottles of “EM Water†to local residents. This special mixture of microorganisms is administered regularly and reduces the levels of E. coli and coliform bacteria in the water.

Here at Wells Bang Na, taking meaningful action in the community is an essential part of our curriculum. This field trip was a powerful example of how the Primary Years Programme (PYP) allows students to connect their inquiries to real-world action. By stepping outside the school and actively engaging with communities in need, our students not only deepened their understanding of the issues faced by the Khlong Toei community but also developed empathy, problem-solving skills, and a sense of global responsibility.

Mr. Friso from Bangkok Community Help commented, “It is so important to get young people involved in community action. You all have the chance to go to a wonderful school like Wells and get a wonderful education. Now it is our responsibility to help the people around us, because we have been given the opportunities that allow us to do so.â€

Nandu, who has been researching water and clean sanitation, was particularly excited to be part of this project.

“Obviously, as part of my research, I knew that there were slums and poor communities in Bangkok,†he reflected. “But I didn’t know about their water access or why it is like that. Today, I got to learn about the history of the community and why they don’t have clean water. And, most importantly, I got to make change and not just talk about it.â€

Vince, who is inquiring into poverty in Thailand, added, “There are so many different aspects to living in poverty. I was surprised that the Khlong Toei community is built on the Port Authority’s land and the people don’t own it. I was also surprised at how fast fires can spread there. I was happy to help Bangkok Community Help because they are making a real difference.â€

Throughout their day, the Grade 5s interacted with local residents with maturity and respect, using all of their Thai skills to support their volunteer work. We sincerely hope that today’s work inspires further projects, volunteering, and fundraising, and that these students help to shape a better future for the communities around them.

Last Friday, our K3 students took a trip back in time with a visit to the Bangkokian Museum. The Puffins and the Rollers had been looking forward to this adventure for weeks, making it an exciting way to wrap up our fourth unit of inquiry on how environments shape communities and culture.

The museum is divided into three sections, each offering a glimpse into the past. The main house, built in 1937, was packed with ‘ancient’ household items and technology. The old television was a huge hit—the children’s reactions (and their jokes about our age!) had us laughing. Another section displayed vintage toys, old coins, and stories about the Bang Rak district, helping the children connect history to their own experiences.

The final part of the museum showcased the personal collection of an Indian doctor who once lived in the house. His old room, along with an interesting display of antique medical tools, gave the children a peek into what life was like for a doctor in the past. They were especially curious about the old-fashioned equipment, comparing it to what they’ve seen in modern clinics.

After all that exploring, we took a well-earned break in the museum’s beautiful garden. The real highlight? Meeting the fish and a turtle, which quickly became the center of attention! The kids loved watching and chatting about them, proving once again that sometimes the simplest moments are the most memorable.

We returned to school buzzing with excitement and plenty to talk about. This field trip wasn’t just fun—it was a hands-on way to bring our learning to life, leaving us with new discoveries, laughter, and a great way to close our unit.

As part of our inquiry into the unit “Where We Are in Place and Time,†our students explored how different cultures are shaped by connections between people, comparing people from around the world, and various cultural expressions. To bring this learning to life, we recently hosted a special Show and Tell event where families shared traditional costumes and traditional snacks or dishes from their cultural heritage. Each class had its own table displaying these items, and students from the other classes were invited to explore the displays, ask questions, and learn about the significance of the items. This hands-on experience helped students deepen their understanding of cultural diversity and how traditions vary across the world.

To make the event even more special, we collaborated with our Music Teacher to incorporate music from the cultures represented in our classes. Students listened to traditional songs and even danced together, experiencing the rhythm and joy of cultural celebrations. The Show and Tell event were a wonderful way to wrap up our unit, giving students the opportunity to connect with one another and share parts of their culture. We, the Homeroom Teachers of Nursery, K1A, and K1B, are thankful for the amazing participation from families and the chance for students to celebrate and learn from the diverse backgrounds of their classmates. I changed geography and traditions as cultural influences on the lines of inquiry.

Â鶹´«Ã½l Bang Na recently transformed into a bustling hub of literary excitement during its captivating Reading Month celebration! This dynamic event was a vibrant showcase of the school’s commitment to igniting a love for reading and captivating students with the magic of literature. Throughout the month, a series of events and activities were carefully crafted to inspire students to immerse themselves in the captivating world of books.

Pajama Day

The festivities kicked-off with Pajama Day, where students arrived at school dressed in their cozy pajamas, accompanied by their favorite books, blankets, and stuffed toys. The day unfolded with a variety of engaging activities, including sustained silent reading, small group reading, and a delightful storytelling session where teachers read ‘Room on the Broom’ followed by a screening of the movie adaptation. It was a day filled with joy and enthusiasm, fostering a warm atmosphere of literary enjoyment for everyone!

Mr. Fan

The following week, our passionate Chinese teacher, Mr. Wang (affectionately known as Mr. Fan), led the ‘Poetry Slam’ session alongside other exceptional teachers, engaging all primary students. The teachers guided the students through the rhythmic beats and melodic verses of poetry in different languages, like Chinese, English, Thai, Spanish, Afrikaans, and more. They also encouraged them to dive even deeper into their imagination by translating the poems into vibrant drawings and expressive writing.

Ms. Rosemary (Ms. Milk) also graced us with her presence and serenaded us with the heartfelt song ‘Never Enough’. Mesmerized by her beautiful voice, the students were captivated, and together, we reflected on the importance of time spent with our loved ones.

Reading Buddies

Another popular activity during this event was the reading buddies program, where older kids paired up with younger students to read together. This not only helped younger students to improve their reading skills, but also fostered a sense of community and friendship among students of different ages.

We were also delighted to welcome some guest readers in person and via Zoom. The Early Years students were thrilled to welcome two dads, each clutching a storybook. Mr. Pethet shared ‘No, David’, encouraging responsible choices, while Mr. Zaw, accompanied by his giant bear, captivated them with ‘The Very Itchy Bear’. Meanwhile, Mr. Sam’s mom gladly read a story to Grade 2 via Zoom about ‘Possum Magic’, a tale that had been told to Mr. Sam when he was their age.

Book Character Day

Finally, the event culminated with the annual Book Character Day where the students and teachers confidently strutted the runway with their creative  and magnificent costumes.

At Wells Bang Na, Reading Month wasn’t just a regular event – it was like stepping into a magical adventure that touched the hearts of every student and teacher. As the month came to an end, the sounds of laughter and the dreams sparked by stories hung in the air, reminding everyone of the wonderful spell reading casts on our lives, shaping our brighter futures.

The International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Program, encourages students and teachers to make connections to real world contexts, strengthening learning and understanding. This supports the inquiry process, and allows students to “go furtherâ€, fostering a greater understanding of the world around them.

In the current unit, students have explored the transdisciplinary theme “How we organize ourselvesâ€, which is an inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems. The central or main idea for Grade 2 is “Money is a system that gives value to goods and servicesâ€. Under this central idea we have explored lines of inquiry into banks, money, spending, saving, budgets, being responsible with money and concepts such as demand and supply. As part of each unit, students are encouraged to take action and will do that by raising money for charity through the organization of a big event at the culmination of the unit.

On their field trip to the Royal Thai Mint, the children learned all about the coin creation process, starting from initial sketches to the final coin press. While we were at the Royal Thai Mint, students put the staff through their paces with their challenging inquiries. An example of which was “how do they go from a large design to a print on a small coin?†The answer is truly fascinating indeed.

The benefits of this captivating field trip were extensive, leaving the children full of newfound knowledge and anticipation for the adventures that await in their next unit of inquiry.

What is so important about hope? This was the question for Middle School and Primary Students from Â鶹´«Ã½l On Nut and Bang Na.

On October 19th, the primary students in the Bang Na campus launched a “Festival of Hope†workshop and invited the middle school students from the On Nut campus to discuss this topic, an initiative taking place in the IB World School community. Hope is universal, it’s a concept that touches all of our lives and hearts, from young to older students. Starting a conversation around “hopeâ€Â  helped our students engage in activities across grade levels as well as campuses, getting to know new people and students from the school community. Our students spent the entire day discussing their perspectives on hope and its connection to their everyday lives at school and at home.

During this event, students moved through a variety of activities that helped them consider how hope is grown and given. The students created artwork, poetry, music and songs that expressed their own hopes and aspirations. At one station, they wrote hopes for the school, the community and the world.

Before the event ended, we reflected on our learning together. The students were invited to speak up during an open-mic discussion. Being the risk-takers that they are, the primary students spoke about how much they enjoyed learning alongside middle school students for the first time. The middle school students communicated beautifully about the importance of hope in their lives. Some students used symbolism and metaphors to express their understandings. All of our students mentioned how fun it was to work together.

Our hope for building a strong community was realized through this day together. The teachers’ hope of developing our students’ self awareness and emotional needs is an important part of this celebration, too. The Hope Festival will continue throughout the next semester, connecting Wells to other IB World Schools around the globe.

Through this exchange, we could fully appreciate what a powerful tool hope really is. Hope can change our outlook, relationships and even impact our community.
