Last Friday, our K3 students took a trip back in time with a visit to the Bangkokian Museum. The Puffins and the Rollers had been looking forward to this adventure for weeks, making it an exciting way to wrap up our fourth unit of inquiry on how environments shape communities and culture.

The museum is divided into three sections, each offering a glimpse into the past. The main house, built in 1937, was packed with ‘ancient’ household items and technology. The old television was a huge hit—the children’s reactions (and their jokes about our age!) haduslaughing. Another section displayed vintage toys, old coins, and stories about the Bang Rak district, helping the children connect history to their own experiences.

The final part of the museum showcased the personal collection of an Indian doctor who once lived in the house. His old room, along with an interesting displayof antique medical tools, gave the children a peek into what life was like for a doctor in the past. They were especially curious about the old-fashioned equipment, comparing it to what they’ve seen in modern clinics.

After all that exploring, we took a well-earned break in the museum’s beautiful garden. The real highlight? Meeting the fish and a turtle, which quickly became the center of attention! The kids loved watching and chatting about them, proving once again that sometimes the simplest moments are the most memorable.

We returned to school buzzing with excitement and plenty to talk about. This field trip wasn’t just fun—it was a hands-on way to bring our learning to life, leaving us with new discoveries, laughter, and a great way to close our unit.

Grade 4 and 5 Students Unite for Survival Camp
Grade 4 and 5 students from 鶹ýl’s Chonburi and Bang Na campuses came together for their first-ever survival camp. Hosted at the Chonburi campus, the event aimed to teach students essential survival skills and then reinforce those skills by applying them to later activities. The camp challenged students to learn how to use available resources to build shelters, cook, and more, all while having fun.

Hands-On Activities and Teamwork
The day was filled with hands-on activities where students learned by doing. They practiced addressing injuries through role-playing scenarios and tied knots to build shelters using rope, bamboo, and tarps. They worked in teams to read different types of maps to solve problems, using this skill in a whole-campus scavenger hunt to find a missing word. When students were working on these activities, they took the lead in solving problems together, with teachers acting as facilitators. The camp also ended with an exciting lesson on building fires and cooking their own food. Students had so much fun throughout the day as they tackled new challenges.

Building Skills and Leadership
We were thrilled to see the students collaborate and support one another throughout the camp. They displayed impressive leadership, engineering, and survival skills while fostering teamwork and communication. The camp was a great opportunity for students to apply what they had just learned, reinforcing their skills through real-world activities. This memorable experience highlighted their ability to problem-solve, lead, and work together as a team, and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.

At 鶹ýl, Bang Na, May 1st marked a special occasion as parents were welcomed onto the campus to partake in an innovative educational initiative: student-led conferences. This event was not merely a showcase of academic achievements, but a testament to the school’s commitment to empowering students as active participants in their own learning journey.

From the spirited kindergarteners to the diligent primary grade students, each child took center stage, confidently articulating their progress and reflections from the academic year. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm and anticipation as parents eagerly listened to their children’s accounts of their learning experiences.

The essence of student-led conferences lies in its emphasis on student agency and ownership of learning. As students stood before their parents, they not only shared their accomplishments but also reflected on areas where they aimed to improve, referred to as “glows and grows”. This reflective practice instills a sense of responsibility and self-awareness in students, fostering a growth mindset that transcends the confines of the classroom.

For parents, witnessing their children take charge of their learning was a profoundly enriching experience. The pride gleaming in their eyes mirrored the sense of achievement felt by their children. Moreover, these conferences provided parents with invaluable insights into their child’s learning process, allowing for meaningful dialogue and collaboration between home and school.

The teachers at the Bang Na campus often say, “students are at the center of everything we do”, which has organically evolved into our informal motto as a teaching team. During the student-led conferences, this belief resonated with authenticity. The teachers and parents could clearly see that our philosophy and approach to teaching has indeed given ownership and agency to each individual student.

By placing students at the forefront of their educational journey, these conferences instill a sense of ownership, agency, and responsibility that transcends the boundaries of traditional education. As we celebrate the success of this initiative, let us reaffirm our dedication to fostering an educational environment where every child is inspired to reach their full potential.

The winter season is always filled with events and festivities. This year was especially memorable as it gave our community a sense of closeness we had not experienced since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Wells Bang Na parents, students and teachers planned activities and celebrated together in a few special ways:

Place of Grace Donations

For the past three years our students and teachers have worked together to take action in the local community. Wells Bang Na has developed a connection with Place of Grace, a foundation that works to improve the lives of children in the Maha Thai slum community. For one month, students and families brought presents and food donations to the school. We aimed to collect 100 gifts in total. By the end of the gift and donation period, over 160 gifts had been given! Additionally, the community donated enough food to fill the food pantry for months. The students of Wells Bang Na were extremely proud to know they made a difference for others.

Frost Fest Show

The 鶹ýl students and parents were very excited on Wednesday, December 14th, as the Bangna campus performed the Frosty Fest 2022 show. The students danced with enthusiasm and were risk-takers. Some classes danced to Christmas songs while our grade 3 & 4 students performed short skits. Having parents on campus with us this month was a treat. The students might have been a little nervous, but they do love to share their talents and hard work with their friends and families!

Frosty Fair

On Friday, December 16th, Wells International Bangna School held a fun fair! The students had a great time playing games and making festive crafts. There were activities like the crazy dress-up game, minute-to-win-it games, cookie tower, and even picking candy canes up with string. The students decorated cookies, made Christmas decorations and even made Christmas cards at different booths. The students replenished their energy with popcorn, candyfloss pancakes, and even Christmas tree brownies and snacks offered by the catering company, Foodhouse. The parents were equally involved in this day by contributing their time by working at the PTO booth, and our Santa Clause was cool with his sunglasses.

Student Reflections Video

The students of our school love to share their ideas, experiences and thoughts with others. In this video, you can hear a little bit more about their views on the meaning of Christmas. We hope they continue to think about the greater meaning of Christmas and all the ways they can share and care for others.

鶹ýl Teachers Practice Lifelong Learning

Our teachers firmly believe in lifelong learning at the Bangna campus of 鶹ýl. As an IB World School, we encourage our students to take risks and try new things by discovering, experimenting, and trying new ideas and activities. So, to be convincing role models to our students, we must practice what we preach.

Why Should Teachers be Lifelong Learners?

Our world is changing so rapidly that we cannot even predict what our students will be when they grow up. To ensure that our students are ready for that world, teachers must adapt to the constantly changing expectations of society on our students.

The 鶹ýl in Bangna creates opportunities for teachers to learn new skills, acquire new knowledge, and learn to use new technology. The teachers at the Bangna campus attend frequent personal development opportunities to learn more about how their students learn, plan practical lessons, and collaborate with their colleagues.

What do the Teachers Learn?

This year, the first professional development showed the teachers new skills and techniques to help our students with emotional regulation. This workshop helped the teachers know better how to support the students’ self-management skills. Also, the new teachers had induction training to learn about the inquiry-based approach and how to evaluate the students’ thinking and research skills. Third, the Thonglor and Bangna campuses joined to learn and practice collaboration. This workshop helped us connect our campuses, share ideas, and learn from each other.

The 鶹ýl Bangna team has some exciting workshops planned, such as useful assessment and integrating the learner profiles into the school culture. Also, Bangna team has plans to connect with future conventions and plan workshops with the IB group. Watch this space for more information on lifelong learning at the Bangna campus at 鶹ýl.

The Back to school season is always an exciting time for students and teachers. Our students were happy to return to school, especially to meet their new teachers and friends. The first two weeks back went by fast. The students in primary classes worked on establishing essential agreements or codes of conduct that every student wanted to see from themselves and others. In the early years’ classes, students got to get to know each other, share their interests, and help decorate the classroom. By the third and fourth week of school, exciting learning experiences were underway, with each class unpacking their first unit of inquiry.

Wells Bang Na welcomed parents to visit the homeroom classes towards the end of August.
These visits were surprisingly exciting for our students. The upper primary students decided they would be the tour guides and managers, introducing their parents to teachers. The K3 students wanted to show off their learning centers and classroom organization systems. Our students were eager to introduce their friends to their moms and dads, strengthening the school and home connections and relationships. Families are an integral part of the support for our school, and we will continue to welcome their participation in event planning and whole-school initiatives throughout the year.

Our teachers are looking forward to an eventful year of learning. Seeing the happiness and enthusiasm of our students during this first month has breathed new life into our classrooms. We are so fortunate to have such a dynamic group of students that will continue to collaborate with teachers in positively shaping this school year and the campus environment.Wells BN

Weekly Wednesday Assembly at Wells Bang Na

By Michael Barnes, Grade 3 Homeroom Teacher

The Wednesday Weekly Assemblies have continued to be a growing success at Wells Bang Na. The Kindergarten 3 to Grade 4 students interact with each other and feel a presence of school unity. Each week teachers and staff work together to create activities that are fun and engaging for students. “The freeze dance assembly was the best one! It was fun because we got to dance using so many different poses,” said Nina of first grade. “The assemblies are an exciting way for students to learn more about their teacher and classmates”, mentioned Teacher David. “I enjoy how Wells Bang Na keeps students engaged even when online learning can be challenging”.

The Talent Show

Our most successful assembly to date was the Talent Show. This assembly asked students of all grades to reflect on their creative talents and showcase them to the school. “My talent was memorizing multiplication numbers,” said Abhiram of Grade 3. “I wanted to show my friends at school how fast I am at multiplying. Prince of Grade 2 demonstrated a Buddhist chant connecting with his traditional Thai cultural roots. “It was my moment to show and make people interested in chanting. It was a great chance to make merit for the school,” mentioned Prince.

The Pet Parade

Even Grade 4 got into the mix of weekly assemblies. They planned and implemented a Pet Parade where teachers and students could showcase their furry friends inside their homes. “Preparing for the assembly was a lot of work. The teachers who plan them make it seem so easy,” said Jai Jai and Mira of Grade 4. Everyone enjoyed seeing all of the different varieties of house pets. “I loved seeing everyone’s pets. But it was also fun to show off my dog to the whole school,” remarked Quinn of grade 3.

As we continue with online learning, our weekly assemblies will remain a staple every Wednesday. Teachers and staff are working hard to offer our students the best in fun and holistic activities to develop our students’ bodies and minds. We look forward to our weekly assemblies, and we hope our students do too!

This year, 鶹ýl Bang Na organized a donation drive for a local foundation called Place of Grace.

Families from the school donated stationary gifts that could be distributed to children at their annual Christmas party. Most of the gifts were donated by families from the school community. Some teachers and other staff members contributed gifts, also. By the end of the gift drive, more than 200 gifts had been collected!

POG3

Wells Bang Na community also focused on collecting donations of dry food items for Place of Grace’s food bank. “Food is something we should always share and I’m so happy we can give to these families” said Ms. Nan. “It made me feel sad to know some kids don’t always have food. I am glad that we could help them out. We should do this again”, though Jason from Grade 4.

On December 16th, representatives of Wells Bang Na school delivered gifts and food donations to the Place of Grace Foundation. “It was wonderful to see an organization that brings the community together and brings joy to children,” mentioned Ms. Ellie, Grade 2 Teacher.

POG2

Annie, from Grade 5 reflected on the project and said “It feels good to give to people, especially if you don’t know them”.

In the future there will be more opportunities for Wells students and families to come together in support of this community. Mr. Paul, the Chinese teacher said “When the time is right, we hope to see the kids and spend time with them. We are excited to do more activities with the children!”.

POG1

鶹ýl Bang Na campus would like to thank our whole community for contributing to this cause! We were able to go above and beyond our goal of 130 gifts.

Evidence of Online Learning

Due to the current Covid-19 situation, the Wells Community has had to transition to distance learning for about two months. Despite the challenge, the teachers and students quickly adapted. We made the most of the situation, continuing to deliver quality lessons to students. Teachers ensured the connection to school remained strong, although socially distant.

In our primary department, we integrated live lessons, instructional videos and a variety of activities in our online learning program. The main platforms we use are Seesaw, Google Meet and Zoom. Our teachers meet weekly by grade level, department and in flexible groups to discuss best practices in online learning. We brainstorm how to maximize effectiveness during this new era of learning. We would like to thank our parents and community for supporting our students at home. Our parents are essential in this process of online learning.

Here are some of the highlights of what has been happening in our virtual classrooms at our Bang Na campus.

Pre-K/Nursery: Pre-K Nursery students were challenged to stay healthy, shine brightly, and be positive during online learning. Students focused on how to manage their emotions and anger through different yoga games and stories. Pre-K finished the unit of inquiry “How We Organize Ourselves”. We took part in an amazing Earth project. In our classroom, play and inquiry are important parts of our day. Pre-K students continue to learn about the world around them, at home through the play and activities. The students developed their self-regulation and organization skills.

K1A: Social distancing is very challenging, especially for our young learners in K1. They are developing their communication and social skills. However, our daily virtual circle time, via Zoom, helps our students continue to develop those necessary skills and daily routine. Our students interact online and have conversations while sharing learning time. Even though live lessons can be a bit chaotic for our young learners, they allow our children to feel connected and part of the class. We also have online story time, physical activities and virtual math engagements. Our current unit of study is about “All About Pets”. The students love this topic!

K2A: K2A is learning about animals. We shared our pets through show and tell. We watched birds out of our windows and gardens. K2A students observed animals around them, near and far. As a line of inquiry, students studied different animal characteristics. We created animals with different art materials, food, play dough, and other materials at home. We noticed that animals are uniquely different in the animal groups. Students have stayed active by doing animal yoga poses and different animal movements.

K2C: During this period of online learning we explored our lines of inquiry animal features, animal behavior and animal classification. K2C students observed animals around them. They learned different groups of animals. Students identify the characteristics of animals then classify them accordingly. The students engage in hands-on activities at home by creating animals and animal life cycles with things around the house. The students actively participate in live sessions each day. They learn through games using their toys and blocks to learn math concepts and literacy.

Grade 1 Dance Class: The grade 1 unit of online learning is about “Sharing the Planet”. The central idea is people can establish practices in order to sustain and maintain the Earth’s resources. In dance class we participated in this transdisciplinary theme by learning a new dance to the song, “We’re in this together”. Grade 1 is proud to present our dance compilation which shows our love and care for Mother Earth. The grade one students understand the importance of protecting the Earth. Grade 1 loves to perform and is excited to share their dance video with our community!

Grade 2: In grade 2, students finished their unit inquiring into money online due to our distance learning situation. Students were challenged to create their own business plans with considerations for our current global crisis. They created an advertisement to persuade consumers to buy their goods or service. Students used their personal strengths to create businesses ranging from translation services to food delivery. Here are some highlights from this engaging and exciting project!

Grade 3: The Grade 3 students were inspired to create a video together that explains how to stay healthy, happy and balanced during quarantine times. The topics they decided to include are fitness, diet, social interaction and fighting boredom. Each student filmed them self explaining ways they have “survived” at home during the isolation. Working on this project together gave the students a greater feeling of togetherness. They are used to working on projects in a collaborative fashion; this assignment enabled them to come back to that familiar format. Learning online has presented us with challenges and opportunities. The Grade 3 students recognized that they have the responsibility to stay healthy and wellness in all circumstances.

Grade 5: Students have been meeting their mentors and steadfastly pushing ahead with their end-of-year exhibition projects. They aren’t letting the current situation slow them down at all! They have begun their sixth and final unit of inquiry on the adaptability of the human body for survival in unique environments and situations; a unit perfectly suited to our current online learning context. They have also begun comparative mathematics exams aimed at easing their transition into middle school maths classes, including introductory Geometry. While not as fun online, grade 5 as a class have been showing remarkable responsibility for their own edification and development.

Physical Education: In the last part of this academic year PE classes faced a completely new way of learning. Even if online classes have been challenging in many ways, they allowed both students and teachers to be creative. We found different ways to stay active. We adapted the home spaces to games and workouts. Despite this weird situation students showed a great involvement in every activity like daily workouts, catching and throwing balls made out of paper and using other home items to create PE equipment.

Art: A new phenomenon took place during the Global Lock-down. During these uncertain times all businesses were closed, including the Art museums and galleries. Even though this has saddened people some individuals have decided to participate in an “Artwork Posing Challenge” where the participants posed as their favorite artwork and posted it to museums or other digital platforms. This idea was also presented to the students. Some students embraced this challenge and allowed their creativity to shine. These beautiful photos currently grace our Seesaw platforms. There were other instances where we allowed free reign onto our art students. A good example is K2. A brief educational digital poster about Animal patterns was presented to the students. The students had to use what they have learned to create their own spotty animal and stripy animal. The students could use any art medium that they have available at their home. Amazing artworks were created in different forms such as painting, drawing, masks, craft, cardboard boxes, etc.
